Slight update: I've just got the German plates required to drive !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! through Germany. The plates are only valid for 5 days, starting yesterday (Thursday) meaning I have to get the car no later than next Monday. I'm going this weekend. Does anyone want to come along on this little roadtrip (3 hours) through Northern Germany?

We'll have to see. I won the Ebay auction, so I have the obligation to buy the car if it's as described. It's cheap enough that I can sell it locally if I need to. If it's as described and a decent export candidate I'm going to park it at a friends place until December, as December (1989) was the month it was both produced in and the month it was first registered in. The way I'm doing it now means I don't have to pay any tax or any insurance, other than the costs/insurance of the 5 day plates (~€85). I won't be able to casually drive it beyond that 5 day period though, not legally.
My 205 GTi is now in the shed of my mechanic friend, being worked on. It's side by side with this guy's pristine E30 325ix sedan and 325e coupe. That's where the Touring is going for the next few months.
